The 21st of December is one of my favorite days! I love this day because tit marks the shortest period of daylight on our daily calendar. I love this day because it means that each day that follows will offer more and more daylight as we move toward the longest day on June 21st.
This day is a reminder of what Christmas is all about; the move from darkness to light, from sadness to joy, from death to life. It speaks of spiritual growth as God, through Christ, has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and is transferring us to His kingdom, the kingdom of light. The shortest day of the year reminds us that God has made this transfer possible through His infinite love for you, me, and for all of humanity.
How appropriate it is, then, that we light the candle of love on our advent wreath. It is God’s indescribable gift, the gift of His love, that we are celebrating this Sunday as we move closer to the great celebration of our Saviors’ birth, God’s indescribable gift for you and me.
